Steve Jeffre's "Emergence"

2006 Plans

Last year, in honor of the 2005 theme Psyche, Emergence debuted as a caterpillar. This year, the mutant vehicle is subtly mutating into a large praying mantis. As its name implies, the praying mantis visibly embodies prayer, the ancient and multifaceted form by which humanity has attempted to realize its hopes and avoid its fears through the articulation of our common intentions. As an insect, the praying mantis reminds us how our intentions must be related to the natural world.

Hope and fear are viscerally evident in the infamous mating habits of the praying mantis:

Females [enjoy ripping] off the male’s head, causing his body to go into spasms that allow his genitalia to connect with hers. When he loses his head, the messages from the brain that inhibit sexual behaviour cease – and he turns into a sex fiend. He can copulate when there’s almost nothing of him left. And he has provided his partner with a substantial meal too. (Source: The Illustrated All Creatures Kama Sutra, http://www.channel4.com/science/microsites/K/kamasutra/wild15.html)

To encourage such uninhibited behavior, Emergence includes a portable dance floor (with dance poles) on the front hood safely accommodating eight dancers, a no host bar, and a lounge in the back with seating for up to 12 people.
